Carrot - Lunar White
Carrot - Lunar White
65-80 days to maturity.
Planting Instructions:
These require a sandy type soil that doesn't have rocks or lumps so the roots can easily grow directly downwards. Sow directly in full sun by making a shallow drill, sprinkle the seeds lightly, and cover with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch soil. Water Well and keep the soil damp until germination.
Care:
Approximately 3 weeks after germination carefully thin the carrots to 1" apart. I like to simply cut the greens down to the soil level rather than pulling them out and disturbing the neighboring growth. Thinning this way also keeps the carrot flies at bay. After gemination water once or twice a week depending on the rainfall in your area. Lunar White's grow approximately 8" and are a sweet. They catch the eye at the marketplace or in a salad.
History
Believe it or not, back when carrots began, they were all white. It was first domesticated in the Mediterranean region circa the 8th Century. The first illustration of a White carrot, labeled No 23 Karettes Daucus Carota, was featured in an Italian Herbal catalog in 1500. Now these beautiful carrots are truly a novelty!
