Beans - Kentucky Pole
Beans - Kentucky Pole
Non- GMO, open pollinated, annual. 50 - 75 days to maturity. 5 - 10 for Germination.
Planting Instructions:
When the soil has warmed to at least 60 F. plant seeds directly 1" deep. Space seeds 4 - 6 inches apart. These beans will climb so a good support structures is essential. Keep watering consistently, soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Heirloom and open pollinated.
Care:
Companion planting with corn, cucumbers or radishes can be beneficial. Avoid planting them near members of the allium family like onions and garlic, which can inhibit bean growth. Regularly inspect the leaves for pests and employ organic and regenerative pest control methods if necessary.
Beans should be about 6" long to harvest, before the seeds inside begin to bulge. They should be firm, crisp, and snap easily. Regular harvesting encourages the plants to produce more pods, which extends your harvest period. It's recommended that you use a cutting tool to harvest as opposed to pulling the beans off the vine. In this way you avoid damaging the bean vines.
History:
Calvin Lamborn, a seed expert from Idaho, developed Kentucky Blue when he crossed Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder pole beans. His project started as an attempt to gain a bean that would fulfill the Japanese market for straight green beans. This bean received an AAS Award (All American Seeds) in 1991.
